Tottenham Hotspur are leading the race to sign Djed Spence, according to the Northern Echo, informs the TBR. Spurs have been linked with the Middlesbrough right-back for a number of months now. Tottenham were reportedly hoping to land Spence in January but fell short of Boro’s asking price. Now, it looks as though Spurs are closing in on the talented 21-year-old.
The Northern Echo claims Tottenham’s interest in Spence is at an advanced stage. There is apparently a growing confidence within the Spurs hierarchy that they will win the battle to sign him.
The report adds that Antonio Conte identified Spence as one of his key summer targets at an early stage of last season, Conte has apparently instructed his club’s recruitment team to do ‘whatever it takes’ to land the youngster. Nottingham Forest – who Spence helped earn get to the Premier League – are also reportedly hoping to land him. The report claims Boro don’t mind who they sell Spence to, providing their valuation – £15million – is met.
A different report, from Football Transfers, has claimed Tottenham have actually made a £17million bid for Spence. Meanwhile, football.london reporting recently reported that Spence is keen to work with Conte at N17. Spence announced himself to a nationwide audience earlier this year when he helped knock Arsenal out of the FA Cup.
Ian Wright labelled his display against the Gunners ‘unbelievable‘. Spence looked a cut above in the Championship last term, helping Forest return to the Premier League after 23 years. But while the Reds understandably want him back, it looks as though Tottenham could soon get the deal over the line.
Spurs have Emerson Royal and Matt Doherty at right-back, but Conte seemingly wants more. And Spence looks like a great shout – a young, incredibly talented right-back with a very high ceiling.
