Tottenham star delivers honest message to Newcastle fans ahead of Sunday clash

Tottenham face Newcastle United today in the first post-Mike Ashey era game at St James’ Park, and Spurs forward Lucas Moura has fired a warning to those in the Northeast.

Lucas, who signed for PSG for mega-money when they were taken over, has first hand experience of what it’s like to be involved in a club with near countless funds. The Brazilian was sold on to Spurs eventually, after being dislodged by the likes of Neymar and Di Maria in Paris.

Newcastle fans are hoping for success in the future now Ashley has gone. A long road awaits them, but there is hope on Tyneside now that a trophy could well be within reach at some point.

However, speaking to The Telegraph, Spurs star Moura has warned Newcastle fans and players that with money, comes expectation.

“Everyone knows football is not all about money. Of course, it helps. But it will bring a lot of expectation because it means they can buy big players, big stars, and make some improvements in the club, the stadium, the training ground,” said Moura.

“So, fans become excited because they want titles. They want to see the team winning trophies. Winning the Champions League and it’s good to be involved with. Because you, as a player, have these expectations to win, to perform. It was a pleasure for me and that’s very normal for a footballer.“

Lucas is expected to play a big part today when the two teams face off at St James’ Park. Spurs could be without key players, with Heung-Min Son rumoured to be among one of two players who have tested positive for Covid-19.

Most Newcastle fans will realise this. There won’t be an expectation that they’ll go and win instantly. Patience is required, and you’d imagine most will be patient.

But Lucas is right. With money comes pressure, and once PIF have spent a few quid, the expectation levels will rise with that.

It’s going to take a good manager, good infrastructure, and good off the field management for it all to click at Newcastle. Once that’s in place, then the trophies might follow.
