Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly in talks with Giorgi Mamardashvili’s agent about a potential move worth £30million for the Valencia goalkeeper. With Hugo Lloris’ tenure as the first-choice goalkeeper appearing to come to a close, Spurs are on the lookout for a new shot-stopper.
Fraser Forster, who has previously been linked with Tottenham, is not seen as a long-term solution to the problem. With the appointment of a new director of football imminent, the London-based club needs to look for a goalkeeper who can be a long-term replacement for Lloris.
According to a report by 90Min, Mamardashvili’s representatives travelled to England last week to hold talks with four clubs, including Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, Leicester City, and Manchester United. The report further states that Valencia will not stand in the way of the player’s move away from the club.
Mamardashvili’s career started at Dinamo Tbilisi, but he made his first professional appearance for Valencia. The 22-year-old stands at an impressive 6ft 6in and has been a bright spot in Valencia’s disappointing season. He has proven to be a reliable shot-stopper and a dominant presence in the penalty area.
Although Mamardashvili has yet to develop his skills with the ball at his feet, he has shown potential to improve this aspect of his game in the future. Spurs could work with him to enhance his distribution and develop him into a complete goalkeeper. Mamardashvili’s physical presence makes him a formidable opponent in the air, and his potential signing could be a coup for Tottenham.
With the recent failure to sign Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Spurs will be hoping to make up for it by signing his compatriot Mamardashvili. While it remains to be seen whether Tottenham will secure the services of Mamardashvili, he is definitely a goalkeeper to keep an eye on in the coming months.
