According to transfer news from Express, Tottenham have received a blow in their efforts to sign Philippe Coutinho. The midfielder is now expected to remain at Barcelona after the club announced that Lionel Messi will be departing the club.
It has been a tumultuous two days in the footballing world. Barcelona have stunned the world by announcing that their talismanic forward. Lionel Messi will be leaving this summer. Apparently, the new contract agreed cannot be signed by Messi as it does not comply with La Liga’s financial regulations.
That has led to speculation of his future with the likes of PSG looking to sign him now. There are several knock-on effects from that, one of them being the future of Philippe Coutinho. The Brazilian has failed to impress in Barcelona colours for the better part of his time there, after sealing a big-money move from Liverpool. (h/t Express)
Spurs were said to be holding an interest in signing Coutinho but with Messi now leaving, Coutinho will likely remain at the club. With the future of Harry Kane in doubt, Spurs were said to be after Coutinho and were likely the best-positioned side to get the diminutive Brazilian. Now they might not get that chance to bring the player back to the Premier League. (h/t Express)
It’s all very speculative at this point as Coutinho’s future is also linked with Messi. By no means does it mean that Spurs might not go after Coutinho but the fact is that it just got that bit harder with Messi leaving the club.
