Mousa Dembele has taken to Instagram to deny reports that he has now hung up his boots but the former Tottenham midfielder confirmed that he will be retiring after his current contract with Guangzhou City runs out, relays the SpursWeb.

Dembele made 249 appearances for the Lilywhites, scoring 10 goals for the club in all competitions in his six and a half year spell at Tottenham (Transfermarkt).

The midfielder was a key part of Spurs’ rise under Mauricio Pochettino and a few former Tottenham stars have put the club’s recent decline down to the Belgian being sold in 2019 (The Athletic).

Reports emerged today that the 34-year-old has decided to retire from the professional game after his contract with Guangzhou was said to have ran out at the end of last year (HLN).

However, Dembele has now revealed that he still has one year left on his deal, which he plans to honour.

The former Spurs man thanked fans for the kind messages that he received following the news of his retirement, which even included a tweet from the official Tottenham Hotspur Twitter account.
