Chris Sutton has told BT Sport he cannot understand comments made by Ben Davies, after Tottenham suffered a 1-0 defeat to Vitesse Arnhem.
Nuno Espirito Santo made 11 changes to the side that faced Newcastle on Sunday – while the substitutes bench was filled only with Under-23 stars.
The starting XI had stayed in North London in order to prepare further and rest for a crucial London derby against West Ham at the London Stadium.
Maximilian Wittek scored the only goal of the game, volleying home brilliantly in the second half. The score remained the same, 1-0 to Vitesse.
Davies was one of 11 changes made to the starting line-up, coming in for Sergio Reguilon and captaining the side. He spoke after the match.
“It was tough to get going. We lost a lot of second balls. I don’t think the pitch helped, we didn’t have any decisions going our way,” Davies said.
Sutton gave his immediate verdict on the comments from Davies – questioning why it was “tough” to get going, and questioning the pitch.
“It is quite alarming some of the things he said there – tough to get going? Why? Blaming the pitch, it is the same for both teams.
“Losing a lot of second balls – I don’t understand a lot of what he said there, it’s about taking responsibility,” Sutton added, on BT Sport.
