Davinson Sanchez will miss Spurs’ trip to Crystal Palace on Saturday after deciding to link up with Colombia during the international break, as reported by The Telegraph.
It is claimed that Sanchez, along with Cristian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso, went against Tottenham’s wishes by deciding to go away.
Not only will the trio now miss the game at Selhurst Park, but The Telegraph reports that they are all set to be fined by Spurs.
It is noted by The Telegraph that Tottenham are understanding of their players’ desire to play for their countries.
And with Romero amongst the trio, Spurs will surely be wary of being too harsh on their players. The Argentinian defender arrived for a lot of money in the summer.
But Nuno Espirito Santo has plenty of options. And with that, Sanchez and Lo Celso may be in danger of finding themselves falling down the pecking order.
For Sanchez, that could be particularly brutal.
The Colombian went into this season with a question mark hanging over his future. He was linked with a move away. Spurs were open to letting him go.
He has not had the best time in North London – having only shown glimpses of his quality throughout his spell.
But Sanchez has started the campaign superbly. He was colossal against Manchester City on the opening day.
And he has helped Spurs keep three clean sheets in a row in the Premier League.
His form has taken pressure off Romero. Nuno has been able to take his time introducing him into the side.
But with Joe Rodon, Japhet Tanganga and Ben Davies capable of playing at centre-back, Sanchez may not necessarily be missed while he is out.
If Romero is then deemed to be ready, it may be that the 25-year-old has lost his place for the time-being.
And with that, Sanchez may be relying on the odd appearance to stake a claim to regain his place.
Maintaining the levels he started the season with will be nearly impossible in those circumstances.
And perhaps, all of his good work will be undone.
