It’s been reported that Antonio Conte wants Nicolo Barella at Tottenham Hotspur.
The Italian coach joined Spurs on Tuesday and according to The Daily Mail, Barella is an early target.
Conte knows the Inter Milan midfielder from his time at San Siro.
But Fabrizio Romano has bad news for the newly-appointed Tottenham boss on this front.
The Italian journalist tweeted in the early hours of this morning that Barella is set to sign a new contract with the Serie A champions.
According to Romano, the 24-year-old will pen a five-year extension and an ‘announcement’ is imminent.
Given that Conte knows Barella, this is a player he’d absolutely love to have at Tottenham.
But if the journalist is right – and he very often is – then the Inter star isn’t going anywhere for the foreseeable future.
It’s a shame because Spurs’ midfield could do with a bit of additional strength and quality – and this lad would’ve been perfect.
This is a player who had a big role in helping Italy to Euro 2020 glory this past summer, clocking six starts during the competition.
He exposed himself to the whole continent as a top-class player and someone who could’ve been a fine early signing by Conte.
And with his link to the player, it seemed a genuine possibility.
But if Romano is right, Tottenham have to look elsewhere now.
