‘Right manager is needed’ – Paul Merson claims two Spurs stars will shine under new expressive manager

Paul Merson believes Tanguy Ndombele and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg will come good at Tottenham under the right manager, writes the SpursWeb.

After a difficult first season at Spurs, it appeared as if Ndombele had turned a corner at the start of the 2020/21 campaign.

However, the Frenchman’s form dropped off significantly in the final few months of the season and he struggled to get minutes under his belt under Ryan Mason.

Much like Ndombele and the majority of the Tottenham squad, Hojbjerg’s form also left a lot to be desired towards the end of the campaign.

In fact, some sources suggest that the North Londoners could even be tempted to cash in on the Dane should they receive an offer of around £30m for him this summer.

However, Merson believes that both Hojbjerg and Ndombele deserve to show what they can do under a manager who allows them to express themselves.

The pundit reserved particular praise for the former Lyon man, labelling him a ‘special’ player.

The former Arsenal midfielder told Super Sunday on Sky Sports: “They haven’t been huge successes a lot of them (recent signings). But they haven’t played under a manager (who can express themselves).

“Ndombele is a good player. £54 million in this day and age is a cup of tea.

“If you’re not going for £40 million now then you’re really not a player, are you? I’m not being horrible but it’s true.

“If you get him into a team where he can express himself then I think he’s a special player.

“You say who has been a success this season then I say Hojbjerg. Why? Because he’s a defensive midfield player.

“And that’s the problem. They haven’t had a coach who can get out and express themselves.”
