Report: West Ham plot blockbuster deal for £43m centre-back as Moyes plans overhaul

West Ham United are allegedly eyeing up a blockbuster summer transfer for Lille centre-back Sven Botman.

That’s according to a report from The Evening Standard who claims that the 22-year-old is a prime transfer target for David Moyes with the Scot planning a squad overhaul at the London Stadium.

Central defence is one of the main areas where Moyes needs to strengthen this summer.

Angelo Ogbonna is still out with an ACL injury and will be 34 before the start of next season.

Meanwhile, Craig Dawson will soon be 32 whilst the jury is still out on Issa Diop regarding whether he is actually good enough to be playing Premier League football.

The addition of a top-class, commanding central defender will be an absolutely necessity in the summer transfer window.

And it seems as though Moyes is planning to set the wheels in motion.

According to The Evening Standard, the Hammers want to sign the Lille star in the summer.

And we think that Botman would be a truly sensational addition for West Ham United.

The Lille ace will cost around £43 million if the Hammers are to bring him to the London Stadium according to a report from L’Equipe (print edition, August 1st, page 37).

Botman would be worth that kind of fee, however. He really is a truly top-class central defender.

He was recently described as an ‘incredible’ centre-back by The Athletic.

In 21 Ligue 1 outings for Lille this season, the Holland under-21 international has averaged one tackle, one interception and 4.5 clearances per game. He also won an average of 2.1 aerial duels per match during those appearances (Who Scored).

The Lille ace is very good with the ball at his feet. In 21 league outings this season, he has made 60.7 passes on average and has recorded a mightily impressive 88.2% completion rate (Who Scored).

Botman stands at 6ft 5in tall and cuts a really imposing figure. And crucially, he is also left-footed.

£43 million may sound like a lot of money for someone who is unproven in the Premier League. However, Botman is the real deal and would be worth every penny.

If West Ham have genuine ambitions to challenge for the top four over the next few years then the owners need to start proving it with actions.

And West Ham signing Botman in the summer would certainly be evidence of that.
