According to a report from the Stoke Sentinel this weekend, Tottenham are among the teams looking to sign Stoke City defender, Harry Souttar.
Souttar, 22, has been in fine form for a resurgent Stoke side this season under Michael O’Neill. The Australian international has been rock solid at the back, and is seen as one of the Championship’s standout defenders.
The Sentinel claims that Everton have been sending scouts to watch him in recent weeks. But they also claim that Tottenham have been watching him since the spring, and are still right in the mix for Souttar.
Spurs are not averse to looking at the Championship for new players. In recent years they’ve signed the likes of Ryan Sessegnon and Joe Rodon.
Souttar has quickly built a reputation for himself after impressing in previous loan spells before returning to Stoke. Indeed, former Fleetwood boss Joey Barton labelled the defender as ‘exemplary’ for his performances.
It’s certainly looking that way. Souttar has been outstanding this season for Stoke and is a key part of what looks like a push for the top six.
The problem for teams like Stoke is that Premier League clubs want bargains now due to the pandemic. And the Championship is often a smart place to shop.
Tottenham have already strengthened their defensive ranks with Cristian Romero this summer. But the likes of Eric Dier have been under pressure, while Toby Alderweireld left in the summer.
Souttar, then, could well be a smart long-term investment for Tottenham and indeed Everton.
