Report: Tottenham almost signed £35m PL star, but for Ndombele

Ndombele’s failed exit cost Tottenham the signing of Van De Beek.

The Spurs fan base are divided when it comes to Tanguy Ndombele.

The Frenchman is fantastic on his day, yet that day comes so rarely and his lethargic nature is hard to see past.

Unfortunately, that’s led to a lot of fans wanting to see the back of the 24-year-old.

However, it’s come to light that had the Lilywhites could have replaced him with a tidy Premier League midfielder in 2020.

According to The Athletic, Jose Mourinho wanted to sign Donny Van De Beek, but couldn’t as the club failed to sell Ndombele.

As a result of that, Manchester United won the race for Van De Beek.

Since the Dutchman made that move we haven’t seen anywhere near as much of the midfielder as we should have.

The Ajax academy man is a tidy player who shone when he came to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with his hometown club.

In the Champions League semi-final of 2019 he scored the only goal of the game at Spurs’ ground.

Obviously the Lilywhites went on to make history in the second leg, but that take’s nothing away from the player.

Many Spurs fans will be absolutely gutted with this news.

A lot of them are far from fans of Ndombele and would much rather have Van De Beek.

Manchester United’s #34 has struggled at Old Trafford.

In his debut season the 24-year-old was only afford the full 90 minutes in just seven matches (Transfermarkt).

This comes despite the fact Man United paid £35m for the player (BBC).

Unlike Ndombele, a lack of minutes for Van De Beek doesn’t seem to be down to a lack of trying.

The situation around the Man United man isn’t 100% clear.

However, many Tottenham fans would seemingly love to swap him for Ndombele if they had the chance.
