Report: Rising star heads to Tottenham after permission granted for move

Southend rising star Charlie Sayers has headed to Tottenham to undergo a trial, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

The Premier League giants are in the driving seat to sign the defender, 17, from the Conference Premier outfit nearby.

A Spurs source has told Football Insider that Sayers, who is a lifelong Tottenham fan, is set for an extended spell at the club and is in the running for a permanent contract.

The left-back featured for Spurs Under-18s in their Premier League Cup clash at Fulham on Saturday morning.

Sayers was named in the starting line-up and did not play for Southend later in the day in their clash at Altrincham.

It has been a meteoric rise for the young non-league player.

He only joined Southend Under-18s from school in April and had broken into their first-team squad by August when Phil Brown was still the manager.

Sayers has made six senior appearances in total for Southend in what has been a difficult season for them since their relegation from the Football League in May.

The non-league outfit have given the green light for Sayers to spend time at Spurs with a view to a transfer.

Tottenham have the chance to win the rising star over with their sales pitch and plans to integrate him into their set-up.

Sayers could be well placed to secure a deal as Tottenham are in the market for a young left-back.

Dennis Cirkin, 19, quit for Sunderland in August, in a deal first revealed by Football Insider, and Marcel Lavinier has been playing left-back for Spurs Under-23s even though he is naturally a right-back.
