Tottenham suffered a 2-0 defeat to Chelsea in the Carabao Cup last night and Football London claim that Harry Kane and Son Heung-min weren’t too pleased with Emerson Royal.
The Brazilian only joined Spurs last summer. Nuno Espirito Santo and Fabio Paratici forked out a little over £25 million for the full-back (Guardian), who was a real star in La Liga at Real Betis during his time there.
A number of clubs were keen to sign Emerson in the summer, but Tottenham eventually won the race for his signature. He is now a regular at the club under Antonio Conte, but his performances haven’t quite been at the level required.
Last night’s game at Stamford Bridge was another example of how much he needs to improve and how frustrating it is for his teammates in attack to see him struggle in crossing positions.
Conte’s system relies on his full-backs to push high up the pitch and have an impact in attack. He wants the likes of Emerson to put in a cross every time he gets in that position, but the Brazilian didn’t really do that last night.
Of all the opportunities Emerson had to cross, he only did so on four occasions. Only two of those found a teammate, which is a very poor return for someone who cost a good amount of money.
The report claims that Kane and Son, who are undoubtedly Spurs’ two best players, were frustrated every time Emerson chose not to cross. The South Korean even yelled ‘Emmy’ in anger in the opening stages of the game when the Brazilian decided to take on a Chelsea man instead of putting the ball in the box.
