Report: Antonio Conte claims that Spurs star defender is struggling to come back

Tottenham right-back Matt Doherty is struggling to make a comeback and is still gaining his best form, according to statements from head coach Antonio Conte.

Last season under Antonio Conte was impressive for the Irish defender. The player was able to show his best qualities and cemented his place in the starting lineup.

The player suffered a serious knee injury in April and dropped out until the end of the 2021/2022 season. This markedly slowed his development, and allowed his competitor Emerson Royal to take over at right-back.

However, this year’s North London team has even greater ambitions. They intend to fight to get into the top four, and get there among the first. Conte explained why Doherty is not playing in place of the Brazilian Emerson Royal.

The Italian said that it was difficult for the defender to come back after a serious injury, but now, the player is on the mend and on the way to get his best form.

“Matthew [Doherty] had a serious injury and is struggling a bit to come back as the player I knew last season. Now he is improving a lot. He’ll have 2 national games and come back and I’ll have the possibility to have another player with rotation.”
