Liverpool’s dynamic midfield duo, Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister, have seamlessly integrated into the Reds’ lineup, drawing praise for their performances. However, there is a prevailing sentiment that there’s untapped potential waiting to be unleashed from both players, and according to ESPN FC pundit Steve Nicol, the key lies in finding the right player to complement them.
Nicol emphasized the need for Jurgen Klopp to identify a player who can effectively sit behind Szoboszlai and Mac Allister, allowing them to reach new heights in their contributions to the team. In a recent discussion on the ESPN FC podcast, Nicol dismissed the prospects of Wataru Endo and Curtis Jones as the missing link in Liverpool’s midfield puzzle.
“If they can get somebody beside the two of them [Szoboszlai and Mac Allister], they can just take a step further forward,” stated Nicol, a former Liverpool player. “Right now, I don’t know [who that could be], I don’t have anyone.”
Nicol had previously considered that Amrabat could be the ideal candidate to complement the duo, offering a supportive role just behind them. However, recent performances at United have raised doubts about the suitability of Amrabat for this crucial position. Nicol commented, “I used to think Amrabat would be the right one beside them, but at United it’s not quite working out. I thought initially he would be ideal; he could sit just behind the two of them and let them do more going forward.”
Expressing his reservations, Nicol ruled out Wataru Endo and Curtis Jones as the solutions to Liverpool’s current midfield conundrum. “But I don’t think Endo’s the answer, I don’t think Jones is the answer. So right now, I think Liverpool need to be on the lookout for somebody.”
As Liverpool strives to maintain its competitive edge in domestic and international competitions, the search for the missing piece in midfield becomes a crucial aspect of Jurgen Klopp’s strategic planning. The quest for the right player to unlock the full potential of Szoboszlai and Mac Allister continues, with Liverpool fans eagerly anticipating the next move in the team’s evolution.
