Paul Merson supports Tottenham Hotspur’s chances of securing a top-four finish in the Premier League over Newcastle United.
According to the Sky Sports expert who wrote for Sportskeeda, Tottenham is a team that has a slightly better winning record than Newcastle United.
Thanks to three victories in their previous four league matches, Tottenham has reclaimed a spot in the top four of the table.
Following their defeats against Leicester City and AC Milan, Spurs made a comeback with a 2-0 triumph over West Ham in north London. On the other hand, Newcastle has experienced a dip in form, with three draws and one loss in their last four league matches. As a result, they have slipped to fifth place in the table, one point behind Spurs but with one game in hand.
Currently, Manchester United has secured their position in third place, seven points ahead of Tottenham. The competition for fourth place is between Spurs and Newcastle. Merson predicts that Tottenham will secure a spot in the Champions League next season, leaving Newcastle behind.
Merson attributes Harry Kane as a crucial player for Tottenham, stating that he is a significant difference-maker for the team. Despite the perception that Spurs have been inconsistent, Merson highlights that they have been performing well, with a spot in the FA Cup, Champions League, and the Premier League’s top four. He goes on to say that Tottenham’s winning record is marginally better than Newcastle United’s.
Therefore, he predicts that Spurs will finish in the top four ahead of the Magpies.
Tottenham supporters may not have warm feelings towards Merson due to his affiliation with their arch-rivals in north London. Nevertheless, it is evident that Spurs have a talented squad, and their recent January transfer window activity has strengthened their depth. Although the team is still a work in progress, Tottenham appears to be heading in the right direction.
Antonio Conte is reportedly considering giving Arnaut Danjuma and Pedro Porro the chance to shine at Tottenham Hotspur
Newcastle has had an impressive season, but it is understandable that they may be struggling as it progresses. The team needs to acquire more depth, which will require a few more transfer windows. Nevertheless, the Magpies have exceeded expectations this season and have a promising future ahead of them.
