‘Maybe not…’ – Conte hits back at Pep’s ‘counter-attack’ claim with Instagram post of Tottenham goals

Tottenham boss Antonio Conte hit back at any accusations his team rely on counter-attacks to score goals, writes the TalkSport.

Spurs stunned the Premier League champions with a last-gasp Harry Kane winner after Riyad Mahrez equalised for City earlier in stoppage time to win 3-2.

The runaway league leaders were never in front, with Ilkay Gundogan cancelling out Dejan Kulusevski’s opener, before Kane restored Tottenham’s lead in normal time.

After City’s defeat, Guardiola said Spurs were ‘deep and compact’ and ‘created a lot of space to run on the counter attack’.

But Conte clearly disagrees and took to Instagram with a video of all three Tottenham goals, demonstrating how each move was built from the back with every City player behind the ball.

Alongside a string of laughing emojis, the caption read: “Counter-attacks!?! Maybe not…”

City bossed possession with 72 per cent of the ball and completed more than double the number of Spurs passes.

The hosts had 21 shots compared to Tottenham’s six, but crucially, Guardiola’s side only hit the target four times, while Conte’s men had five efforts on target.

And few could argue against Spurs deserving the victory in terms of clear-cut chances, with a Kane goal disallowed by VAR due to a narrow offside call, alongside a big chance missed by the England captain.

Nevertheless, despite firing back at Guardiola, Conte made his respect for the Spaniard clear before the trip to the Etihad on Saturday.

“I think that we are talking about the best coach in the world because he shows it in many teams, many different situations, that it is good to build something important and if the club supports him because when you stay in Barcelona and Bayern Munich and then Manchester City, these clubs wanted to invest in him and he repaid this trust,” he said.

“I repeat when you see a team of Pep Guardiola you can see an idea of football and you understand that there is a lot of work into the team and this work is his idea and for this reason it’s for me in this moment is the best coach in the world.

“Manchester City in my opinion is the favourite to win the league this season and also is one of the favourites for the Champions League because we are talking about a team who are very very strong in every aspect – the squad and I don’t see weakness in this team.”
