Maddison handed potential England boost after Euro 2020 change

James Maddison has been afforded an England boost after Uefa announced they had increased the squad size for the upcoming European Championships.

The Leicester City midfielder’s hopes of making Gareth Southgate’s squad looked to have taken a double blow over recent months, when an injury cost him a call-up in March, before his breach of Covid protocols prompted the Three Lions boss to warn that off-field indiscipline would not be tolerated.

However, previous misdemeanours have not stopped other players from earning second chances, which is something Maddison may now receive after Uefa allowed participating countries to add three extra players to their squads.

While nations usually pick a group of 23 for tournaments, 26 will be permitted this summer due to ongoing concerns over Covid-19.

In a statement, Uefa said: “To mitigate the risks of teams facing a shortage of available players due to possible positive Covid-19 tests and subsequent quarantine measures, it has been decided to exceptionally increase the squads for all participating teams.”

Maddison still has some work to do to make the squad, and will need to improve his fitness and get back to the form he showed in the winter to make his case, particularly with the likes of Phil Foden, Mason Mount, and Jesse Lingard playing well for their clubs.

The 24-year-old City star is the club’s only player in contention for the England squad, with other contenders Harvey Barnes and James Justin now out with injury until after the European Championships.

The ruling could help other City players though, including Ricardo Pereira, who could be selected by Portugal as a wildcard, having not featured in their squad since recovering from injury.

City are still likely to be well-represented at the tournament, with Youri Tielemans, Dennis Praet, Timothy Castagne (all Belgium), Kasper Schmeichel (Denmark), Danny Ward (Wales), and Caglar Soyuncu (Turkey) expected to be named in their nations’ squads.
