Football London journalist Alasdair Gold has shared on his YouTube channel that he has been told that Dele Alli and Steven Bergwijn were the two Spurs players who impressed most in training in the opening two weeks of Nuno Espirito Santo’s tenure.
It looks set to be a huge season for a number of Tottenham players. Obviously, the last campaign proved to be hugely disappointing.
And Dele is certainly one of those with a major point to prove. The Englishman struggled for game-time under Jose Mourinho.
There was plenty of speculation at various points that Dele may end up leaving. And fans are obviously waiting to see if the 25-year-old can rediscover the incredible form that he showed initially following his arrival.
Another player who needs to step up is Bergwijn. The Dutchman has shown glimpses of his quality since joining.
However, he has struggled for large parts of his spell.
And it did appear that neither player stood out in their opening pre-season friendly with Leyton Orient at the weekend.
For some, that may be setting the alarm bells ringing. But Gold has issued an encouraging update on what they had shown in training leading up to the game.
“I’m told in Nuno Espirito Santo’s first two weeks, those two players have been probably the most eye-catching in terms of how good their training has been,” he told his YouTube channel.
“So I thought it was quite interesting that actually, they were two of the quieter players in terms of making an impact on the game.”
Of course, it would have been fantastic if Dele and Bergwijn stole the show at Brisbane Road.
However, it seems unlikely that Nuno will be reading too much into their displays if they are performing extremely well in training.
There is still almost a month left until the Premier League campaign begins. So there is plenty of time for the pair to get sharper and take their form in training out onto the pitch.
