Erik Lamela has been speaking to the media about his time at Sevilla so far, as well as the swap deal involving him and Bryan Gil at Tottenham.
Well, shortly after Fabio Paratici’s arrival as Sporting Director, Tottenham wrapped up the £21.6m signing of Gil from Sevilla.
It has proven to be an inspired bit of business, with Gil performing well in his three appearances for Spurs so far.
Lamela has also been left impressed by the 20-year-old.
Speaking to AS, he said: “They spoke highly of him to me. He has great potential; he is very young. I saw him in a match and he has a lot of future ahead of him. Tottenham are a good group, they will receive you well.”
We can’t disagree with the Argentine – Gil is superb.
There’s a reason he was likened to Neymar by Barcelona scout Vaya Ballabriga – he has the potential to be world class.
In our view, the deal to bring Gil to north London could be the move of the summer.
Somehow, Tottenham managed to swap an injury prone 29-year-old for an exciting 20-year-old with the world at his feet.
Of course, Spurs also had to pay £21.6m, although that’s still a bargain for a player of Gil’s potential.
Managing to offload Lamela also shouldn’t go unnoticed. As we saw this summer when Arsenal struggled to sell their deadwood, it can be hard to get rid of unwanted players.
So, for Paratici to get rid of a high earner who wasn’t pulling his weight is nearly as big of a success as securing Gil’s signature.
Only time will tell if the Spaniard fulfils his potential, but for now, you can’t help but praise Tottenham’s business on this occasion.
