Tottenham Hotspur have been praised by club ‘insider‘ John Wenham for their ‘phenomenal’ signing of Uruguay international Rodrigo Bentancur, writes the FTT.
Before the club brought in Ivan Perisic, Fraser Forster, Yves Bissouma, Richarlison, Clement Lenglet, Djed Spence and Destiny Udogie over a busy summer transfer window, both Bentancur and Dejan Kulusevski arrived from Juventus in the winter.
The latter has gone on to be a Premier League revelation, scoring six goals and setting up 10 others domestically since joining Spurs in January.
His team-mate Bentancur has also impressed, as explained by Wenham to Football Insider.
According to the Spurs insider, the South American was Antonio Conte’s ‘best player on the park’ against Fulham last weekend. Wenham also goes on to suggest that the 25-year-old could become a ‘£50 million player’.
He stated: “Bentancur came back in last weekend and he was the best player on the park, for me.
“You noticed how much we missed him in that West Ham game. Just how calm and composed he is on the ball.
“He does really good pressing and defensive work. We just look a much better outfit when he is in the side.
“I can’t actually believe we got him for £16million on the back of winning three straight Scudettos, at 24-years-old, it was phenomenal business.
“We already have a £50million player there who is only going to get better.”
Bentancur has proven to be a somewhat underrated signing since his move to north London.
This season, the 25-year-old has ranked among Tottenham’s top six performers by average match rating, whilst making their fourth-highest rate of tackles per 90 (WhoScored).
Indeed, he has been a combative and capable midfield presence alongside Pierre Emile Hojbjerg, and it appears that Conte has discovered a very sturdy partnership to protect Spurs’ defence.
