‘I asked him’ – Dier’s first coach shared what the player has told him about playing under Conte

Eric Dier’s former coach has been speaking to the Athletic and has shared what the player has told him about playing under Antonio Conte at Tottenham Hotspur, writes the TBR.

Dier has rediscovered his best form under Conte since the Italian took over in North London last November.

The 28-year-old has been a mainstay in the Spurs defence and is now knocking on the door to be called up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad once again.

And Dier’s first coach, who worked with him at Sporting Lisbon, has shared what the defender has told him about Conte.

Speaking to the Athletic, Jose Joao revealed that Dier says he identifies with Conte more than any other coach he’s worked with throughout his career.

“Today, Eric is a reference point at Tottenham,” Joao said.

“He’s a leader; people listen to what he says, and you can see the influence he has on the team.

“He loves the manager. When I saw him in the summer, I asked him which coach he identified with the most across his entire career, and he said it was (Antonio) Conte — you can see that the atmosphere at Tottenham today is different.

“He’s also an incredible human being. He still looks like the little kid I first met all that time ago.

“He’s still shy and reserved, that hasn’t changed. He’s a fantastic person and it’s a big honour to have coached him.”

Dier has played under some brilliant managers during his playing career, including the likes of Jose Mourinho and Mauricio Pochettino.

Pochettino brought Dier to Spurs back in 2014 and the Englishman played some of the best football of his career under his former boss.

The England international converted himself into a centre-back under Mourinho and did put in some promising displays.

But it’s under Conte that Dier has really begun to flourish once again and he looks like he is back to his very best.

The defender has become a leader in the Spurs backline and Conte will be relying on him massively this season.
