‘His better fitness’ – Alasdair Gold shares who he thinks must start at right-wing-back for Spurs today

Football London correspondent Alasdair Gold admits that he believes Emerson Royal could probably be in the starting lineup against Southampton due to his excellent physical form. The journalist says Matt Doherty will replace Royal as the season progresses, as the Irishman is currently recovering from injury.

However, the Brazilian’s form is the best right now and he is fully fit to play.

‘I reckon Emerson Royal could well start tomorrow because of his better fitness levels but I felt Antonio Conte’s answer to my question yesterday about the right wing-backs hinted that Matt Doherty will be his number one in the role.’

Explaining his choice at the pre-match press conference, Antonio Conte gave his opinion on the future of the position:

‘For the right side we have a similar situation like Ivan [Perisic] to Matthew. Matthew had a serious injury and I think worse than Ivan. Now he is working a lot. He has had a bit of time to come back to be fit like last season.‘
