‘Have to be honest’ – Conte reacts to whether the gap between Spurs and top clubs has decreased

Antonio Conte has insisted that Tottenham have ‘just started this process to improve the squad’ under him, and there is still a huge gap between them and the biggest teams in the Premier League, writes the SpursWeb.

Tottenham introduced seven new faces through the Hotspur Way doors over the summer, with Ivan Perisic, Fraser Forster, Yves Bissouma, Richarlison, Clement Lenglet, Djed Spence, and Destiny Udogie signing on the dotted line.

However, only Ivan Perisic has cemented himself as a regular starter so far, with Richarlison being used off the bench and Bissouma only coming in to replace the unavailable Rodrigo Bentancur.

When asked about the success of the summer transfer window, Conte insisted they did what the club could afford to do, but the quality of the top teams is still far above Tottenham’s squad.

He was also keen to point out that Spurs are at the start of the process to reach the levels of those top teams, and Tottenham fans will be hoping the Italian sticks around long enough to see the project through.

Conte said (Football London): “I think first of all we have to understand in this transfer window we did what the club could do.

“I think that we did good things but I have to be honest with you because I see other squad of top team there is too much distance, still too much distance. For this reason, we have to know we have just started this process to improve the squad.”

When asked whether Spurs have an advantage because they got their deals done early, Conte responded (Dan Kilpatrick): “If you sign a player for £80-100m on the last day you have a big advantage because you’re signing a top player.”
