Paul Merson has hit back at critics who slammed him for suggesting Antonio Conte shouldn’t drop Son Heung-min hours before his stunning hat-trick for Tottenham on Saturday, writes the HITC.

Prior to Spurs beating Leicester City 6-2, there was a lot of talk about what might happen to Son given that he had zero goals to his name this season and the likes of Richarlison and Dejan Kulusevski were playing very well.

At the time, Merson told Soccer Saturday on Sky Sports (17/09/22 at 2:05 pm) that Spurs should ‘let Son play’ through his bad form because he is a ‘world-class’ performer and they only have two of them.

These were Merson’s comments on Son, prior to the weekend’s goalfest.

“If you were the manager of Tottenham,” said Merson. “Would you leave him out? We are talking about a world-class player here. Tottenham haven’t got a lorry load of world-class players.

“They have two, so for me, I don’t see how you can keep him out of the team. I know he’s not playing well, but I am looking at it thinking ‘how can you possibly leave Son out?’

“He’s not world-class (on then having to leave out Kulusevski). No, he doesn’t deserve to be left out. But then, Richarlison is an impact player, for me.

“Yes, 100% (then I would leave Richarlison out). If I am a manager, and I need to look at my bench and go ‘right, who is going to come on and change this game?’ Richarlison ticks that box, at the moment. For me, Son is world-class. I would let him play through it.”

Well, before Son’s hat-trick, Sky Sports had uploaded a video of Merson’s comments on their Instagram page.

It got some heat because many were slamming Merson for his comments, with some even taking a dig at the former double-winners very own managerial record.

But, once Son scored a 13-minute hat-trick, Merson was fishing for those critics in the comments section, as he feels that he was proven right that Conte should have kept him in the XI.

One fan wrote: “That’s why @paulmerseofficial is sitting there and @antonioconte is 1 of the best managers in the world.”

Merson responded by saying: “Was I wrong? You reckon he will be left out again?”

Then another supporter proceeded to tell Merson ‘Got that one wrong….AGAIN,” to which he responded by saying: “How you figure? Surely proves my point? You reckon he will be dropped next match?”

Merson was then told that Son ‘killed the game from the bench’ and he responded by saying: “See that side of it as well – don’t think he will be left out for a while though.”
