As informs the TBR, Antonio Conte has lauded Emerson Royal following his performance for Tottenham Hotspur in their FA Cup win over Brighton as he spoke of the difficulties the right-back has faced since coming to the Premier League – in comments reported by Football London, writes the .
Royal produced arguably his best performance yet for Spurs. Obviously, for some, that may say more about how he has performed in the months since his move from Barcelona.
But he was very good against the Seagulls. And he played a crucial role in Tottenham’s second goal. It was Royal who ran down the right and attempted to cross the ball into the box.
The strike took a big deflection off Solly March and sliced over Robert Sanchez and into the Brighton net. It was immediately clear just how much the goal meant to Royal as he sprinted over to the Tottenham bench.
Conte made no secret of the fact that Royal has not found the going easy since coming to Tottenham. But he insisted that he was extremely impressed with how he got on on Saturday.
“Emerson, he needed this goal. I think his performance was really top tonight,” he said, as reported by Football London.
“He played very well. And it’s important for his confidence, important for him. Don’t forget that also Emerson is only 23 years old and to come here and play in another league is not simple. There are a lot of difficulties, but Emerson is a good player and knows very well that there’s space for improvement.”
Tottenham fans may be hoping that a new wing-back is on the radar this summer. In fact, it was reported this week that Spurs are likely to make a move for Tariq Lamptey – who lined up against them in North London.
But with the window closed, Conte has to make do with the players he has. And with that, Royal has a fantastic opportunity.
He can set his sights on holding down that wing-back spot, and growing in the position. Clearly, there is a player with potential there.
But, as Conte suggests, he needs to make more of an impact on a more regular basis.
The next few months could be crucial for Royal, and deciding what Tottenham will do in the summer.
