Journalist Fabrizio Romano has now said that sources have told him that Tottenham Hotspur target Kalvin Phillips is very likely to switch clubs in January.
The future of England international Kalvin Phillips has become a subject of much speculation in recent times, and journalist Fabrizio Romano has added fuel to the fire. In a recent update on his YouTube channel, Romano revealed that sources close to the situation suggest a January transfer is highly probable for Phillips.
It’s no secret that Kalvin Phillips has struggled to secure a spot in Pep Guardiola’s formidable Manchester City squad. Even when opportunities presented themselves, such as Rodri’s suspension following a red card against Nottingham Forest, the young Rico Lewis was preferred to Phillips in the central midfield role. This lack of playing time has raised doubts about his future at the Etihad.
With Phillips’ prospects at Manchester City looking bleak, there has been persistent speculation about his potential transfer. One club that has shown a keen interest in the midfielder is Tottenham Hotspur, who are reportedly considering a move in the upcoming January transfer window. The ease of such a transfer might be facilitated by Phillips’ limited recent playing time.
Despite his club struggles, England manager Gareth Southgate has continued to show faith in the 27-year-old midfielder. However, the question remains: can Southgate afford to continue relying on Phillips if he continues to languish on the bench at Manchester City? Phillips himself has openly admitted that he’s contemplating his future due to his lack of game time.
Fabrizio Romano now believes that both Phillips and the club are approaching a crucial juncture in their relationship. He stated, “As we know, the situation is not quiet around Kalvin Phillips. He’s super professional, he’s a super nice guy, always very confident, always very quiet so he’s never creating any problems but the problem there is a technical problem.”
Romano continued, “Kalvin Phillips needs to play, he’s saying that in public and in private even more. He needs to play football, he can’t always be on the bench, he wants to go to the Euros, he wants to be an important player for the English national team and for his club.”
While Phillips turned down several opportunities to leave City in the summer, the situation has not improved, and Romano expressed his concerns. “In the summer he had many possibilities he decided to reject because he wanted to continue at City and fight for his place, but now it’s almost November and he’s still never playing.”
Summing up the situation, Romano indicated, “So, the feeling of sources on both player and club is that in January it’s very likely that Kalvin Phillips will leave Manchester City to try a different experience.”
Kalvin Phillips’ potential departure from Manchester City could mark the beginning of a new chapter in his career, and it remains to be seen if Tottenham Hotspur or other suitors will make a move for the talented midfielder in January.
