Everton have made Roberto Martinez the clear favourite to replace Rafa Benitez at Goodison Park this week, according to The Mirror.
The newspaper have reported in their print edition (17 January), that the Spaniard is closing in on being reappointed in Merseyside.
It is even reported that the Toffees are hopeful of having an agreement in place before the Aston Villa clash on Saturday.
There had to be a contingency plan in place.
It has been a mess at Goodison Park for so many years now, with Benitez’ reign just the latest in a long list of catastrophes.
Frank Lampard, Jose Mourinho and Wayne Rooney are also in the mix, with numerous names already thrown into the hat.
It looks as though there are many on the board that are pushing for Martinez to be brought in from the cold of international management at Belgium.
This next decision will be the make or break of Everton.
Dangling above the relegation zone after Leeds swept aside West Ham yesterday, Farhad Moshiri and the board can’t afford to make another very expensive mistake.
Martinez isn’t the most popular name, but at least it would be a familiar face who knows the club inside and out – something we haven’t had in so many years.
Appointing a Benitez was a disaster waiting to happen, and it was no surprise when it did happen, with Norwich just the tip of the iceberg.
We need results and some stability, hopefully, that is something that Martinez can bring should he be appointed before the Villa game.
