Former West Ham striker Frank McAvennie has slammed Tottenham star Eric Dier despite his latest impressive display, writes the Football Insider.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, McAvennie admitted he can’t understand why Dier is still playing as a defender.
The 28-year-old has made 28 appearances as a central defender for Spurs this season, including in Monday night’s 5-0 hammering of Everton.
In July 2020, Dier told Sky Sports he wanted to be recognised as a defender despite playing in the midfield for the majority of his career.
McAvennie insists Premier League defenders will relish playing against Dier whenever he is in the Spurs lineup.
“Why is Dier still playing as a defender?” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“Don’t kid yourself, you are not good enough. You are not a defender. No wonder Tottenham aren’t keeping clean sheets.
“He’s a midfielder and you can tell whenever he’s trying to defend. He doesn’t have that awareness.
“Look at it this way, if he’s a defender then as a striker I would happily play against him.
“I would fancy my chances up against him now. What must Premier League strikers think?
“They are dominating him, it’s not even close. I don’t know why Tottenham haven’t replaced him.
“No wonder they can’t beat anyone at the moment.”
Dier recently recovered from a tight problem that ruled him out of key games against Wolves and Leicester.
Since recovering, he has played in wins against Everton, Man City and Leeds United as well as a loss to Burnley.
