‘Doesn’t want to be a second fiddle’ – 24-year-old Tottenham defender keen on January exit

Tottenham Hotspur could be on the verge of losing Joe Rodon in the upcoming January transfer window, informs the HardTackle.

According to a report from Football Insider, Joe Rodon’s days at Tottenham Hotspur are numbered, as the player is now seemingly keen on securing an exit. It appears the defender has been left frustrated by the lack of game-time offered to him at Spurs and will be looking to seal an exit in January in an attempt to revitalise his career.

A homegrown talent from Swansea, Rodon has been a part of the Tottenham side since last year, when he joined the club for a fee of €12 million. He was brought in by Jose Mourinho in light of the departure of the experience Jan Vertonghen.

Unfortunately, the Welshman’s time at Spurs has been riddled with mediocrity and lack of progress. Including Mourinho, he has already played under four managers in a matter of just one and a half years. The young centre-back has struggled with a lack of game-time under all of them, often being considered as second fiddle.

In the current squad, Rodon has fallen has behind Cristian Romero, Davinson Sanchez, Eric Dier, Japhet Tanganga and Ben Davies in the pecking order. He has featured in just one Premier League game so far, with new coach Antonio Conte publicly claiming that he considers him only as a back-up for Dier.

Rodon’s position at Tottenham could take a further hit in January, as the club is actively looking for defensive reinforcements. Indeed, the Lilywhites have been linked with a swoop for talented defensive stars like Stefan de Vrij, among many others across Europe.

As such, Rodon is prepared to move on and take the much-needed step in his career by leaving Tottenham in the winter transfer window. The Welshman hasn’t been exclusively linked with any club yet, although one would imagine the likes of West Ham to register interest in the 24-year-old.

The Hammers are already involved in the race to sign Nathaniel Phillips. And in Joe Rodon, they could find themselves another talented centre-back, who arguably offers a higher ceiling as well. Newcastle United could be another potential destination for the defender, although it remains to be seen whether Tottenham have any intention of parting ways with their defensive asset in mid-season.
