Antonio Conte has told his press conference – as per Football London – that Tanguy Ndombele needs to work harder than his Tottenham teammates.
Conte spoke to reporters in person for the first time since March 2020, as Spurs welcomed back journalists to the media room at Hotspur Way.
Ndombele, 24, has been questioned since joining Spurs in the summer of 2019. His attitude, and his fitness are under the microscope.
Many have questioned if he is fit enough to play 90 minutes. Of his 86 appearances for Spurs, only 25 times has Ndombele lasted the entire match.
Fabrizio Romano told his Here We Go podcast during the break that Conte was trying to change the mentality of both Ndombele – and Dele Alli.
Now, speaking to media before Sunday’s game against Leeds, Conte explained why Ndombele has to work harder than other Spurs stars.
“I have seen many managers struggle with his position. He has the quality. He has to understand it is a team and he has to play into the team.
“We are working very hard. He has to work much more than the others. He has talent but he has to put it into the team for the team.
“Every single player has to know what he has to do. If every player just runs around the pitch, it will be a mess,” Conte said, on Ndombele.
Ndombele made a solid start at Tottenham under the guidance of Mauricio Pochettino. But soon after the Lyon star signed, Pochettino had gone.
In defensive systems, Ndombele has been somewhat stifled. His work rate going in off the ball – and then when he gets it, he is too tired to do anything.
Jose Mourinho grew tired and frustrated with the France international, while Nuno Espirito Santo simply did not know how or where to use him.
But Conte might just convince him to improve. That is, his fitness, his attitude and therefore his confidence and form.
