It is being reported that Tottenham Hotspur are ‘considering a surprise move’ for Leeds United winger Dan James as a replacement for Bryan Gil, writes the F365.
The pinch of salt klaxon has sounded this morning as Spurs are said to be interested in signing James from Premier League rivals Leeds United.
The ex-Manchester United winger moved to Leeds last summer for a fee in the region of £25m.
James was often used as a striker last season with Patrick Bamford frequently being unavailable due to injury.
The Welshman has good attributes, with his pace being his most dangerous asset. But his lack of final product has often led to him being criticised.
Richarlison has joined Tottenham this summer to add to what is already a strong attack. Spurs boss Antonio Conte said earlier this month that they are going in the “right direction”:
“I think we’re going in the right direction but you know very well you need to have a bit of patience,” Conte said.
“We know that in England it is difficult to fight to win but we want to try to be competitive, to try to improve on last season and this is our target.
“If you ask me about City or Liverpool, my answer is we are talking about two of the best clubs in the world that are working with the same coaches for years.
“Now they are in a position that is very difficult for the others to close the gap, but we have to do this. Also because [Spurs] have to spend £100m for six players, they go and spend that for one or two players.
He added: “Klopp, Guardiola and [Chelsea’s Thomas] Tuchel … to become a strong team you need to have stability and a vision. The idea has to be very clear, and then you go step-by-step and try to reduce this gap.”
With the likes of Yves Bissouma, Ivan Perisic and Djed Spence also signing for Tottenham this summer, they are now focused on letting up to seven players go.
Gil is among those set to depart as he will return to Valencia on loan in the coming days.
The Daily Mail are reporting that Tottenham are ‘contemplating a shock move’ for James as a replacement for Gil.
It is tough to make a case for Spurs needing to replace Gil, who only played nine times in the Premier League last term.
He was way down the pecking order under Conte and you would have to be a really special player to challenge Son Heung-Min or Dejan Kulusevski.
It is fair to say that James is not at that level, but The Daily Mail are claiming all the same that Tottenham are interested in him.
