Everton suffered another blow in their fight against relegation, losing 2-1 to West Ham – and Garth Crooks has hammered Alex Iwobi for his role in Jarrod Bowen’s winner, sayng an “infant” could have controlled the pass.
Goals from Aaron Cresswell – a gorgeous free-kick into the top corner of Jordan Pickford’s goal – and then Bowen secured an important win for West Ham as they look to finish in the top six of the Premier League.
Mason Holgate scored a deflected effort for Everton – but it was not enough. West Ham did dominate but Everton could easily have come away with a point, had it not been for a lacklustre touch in midfield from Iwobi.
The Nigeria international failed to control a simple five-yard pass to his feet and forward came West Ham – Michail Antonio having his shot saved, and the rebound falling to Bowen to score. Crooks criticised Iwobi.
“Everton deserved to get something, if not for the stupidity of Keane and the incompetence of Iwobi. If Keane stays on his feet and Iwobi controls a ball an infant could have handled, Everton would have got a point,” Crooks said.
Iwobi earned his place in Everton’s starting line-up after scoring the winner against Newcastle last time out – to earn his side a crucial three points. But ultimately, Iwobi has been poor for Everton since joining from Arsenal.
He has failed to live up to his price tag, which is likely to be the undoing of his move. The pressure of being a £35million player earns more pressure than others – and Iwobi has been one of Everton’s worst of late.
