Arsenal’s ‘Incredible’ Player Sold for £20M May Join Tottenham Hotspur

Former Arsenal goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez is reportedly being considered by Tottenham Hotspur for a move from Aston Villa in the upcoming summer transfer window. According to 90min, Martinez, who was described as “incredible” by John Terry in December 2022, is on Tottenham’s shortlist.

Although Martinez is a former Arsenal player, the 30-year-old could be tempted by the prospect of playing Champions League football with Tottenham. 90min reported that Martinez “would ideally prefer” to play in the prestigious tournament, which Tottenham is likely to qualify for this season as they are currently in a strong position to finish in the top four of the Premier League table.

Despite being bitter North London rivals, Tottenham may be willing to overlook Martinez’s past association with Arsenal if he can help them achieve their goals. Martinez did not make a significant impact during his time at Arsenal, but he has since excelled at Aston Villa, winning the 2021 Copa America and the 2022 Qatar World Cup with Argentina.

Martinez had limited opportunities at Arsenal until his final season when he got the chance to play due to an injury to Bernd Leno. However, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta reinstated Leno as the number one goalkeeper once he was fully fit, and Martinez subsequently left for Villa in a £20 million deal.

With Leno’s departure and Aaron Ramsdale as Arsenal’s current number one, Martinez’s move to Tottenham could be a possibility. However, it remains to be seen if Martinez is willing to cross the North London divide and if Tottenham can secure his services.
