Alan Shearer Says He’s Actually Not Yet Convinced by Tottenham Player Gary Lineker Really Likes

Tottenham Hotspur secured a crucial 2-1 win against Burnley over the weekend, reigniting their faint hopes of finishing in the top four. The unlikely hero for Spurs was young defender Micky van de Ven, who slotted home a composed winner late in the game. However, there seems to be disagreement among pundits about the 23-year-old’s potential.

“I like him,” said Gary Lineker on The Rest is Football. “He’s still young, and there’s undoubted ability there.” However, Lineker revealed a contrasting opinion from fellow pundit Alan Shearer: “Alan is not so sure, we have had a bit of a debate.”

Lineker elaborated on Shearer’s reservations: “He [van de Ven] suffered a bit because he did his hamstring and then he had another tweak and he made a couple of mistakes particularly against Newcastle.”

Shearer himself chimed in: “I think he is going to be very good… But I think to say how brilliant he is, it might be a little bit too soon. There is certainly bigger tests that will come his way, but he has a very good start. He looks to be a good signing but I wouldn’t go overboard just yet.”

While Lineker sees promise in van de Ven, Shearer acknowledges the youngster’s injury struggles and inconsistencies. Both pundits agree that time will tell whether van de Ven can live up to his potential at Tottenham Hotspur.
