‘Admired by Poch’ – Antonio calls impressive 18-year-old up to Spurs 1st-team training ahead of Liverpool

Antonio Conte has been putting his Tottenham players through their paces ahead of Sunday’s Premier League meeting with the Reds.

It’s not been an easy few weeks for Spurs with postponements due to either covid or adverse weather.

But as things stand – at the time of writing – the game between Tottenham and Liverpool is set to go ahead on Sunday.

Every so often, Premier League managers will call up academy talents to bolster the first-team training ranks.

And this week, Santiago took part alongside the Spurs seniors – here he is pictured on the left.

The 18-year-old joined Tottenham in July 2019, arriving from the Celta Vigo academy.

Former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino included Santiago in pre-season first-team training.

That’s quite a feat considering he was just 16 at the time, suggesting Pochettino rated him highly from the off.

Since joining Tottenham, Santiago has made 49 appearances for the Lilywhites at age level.

Earlier this year, Superhotspur wrote a detailed article singing the young Spaniard’s praises.

“A midfield player with great balance,” they began.

“In the central areas of the pitch Yago is so slick on the ball and he is a midfield technician who is more than capable of making things happen and creating chances.

“A good passer of the ball and a player who is quick on his feet, Santiago is an intelligent player who can at times make things look effortless.

“As a CAM Santiago makes good forward runs off the ball and he also links the play well from that role.

“He likes to pass the ball forward (he holds onto the ball well) and he is a forward thinking midfield player who is a skilful and tricky player.

“But he is also a hard worker who helps out the team well.”
