“A class above”- Ex-PL goalkeeper tells Tottenham how they can benefit from playing “world class” summer signing

In conversation with Football Insider (h/t Football London), ex-Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Paul Robinson has heaped praises on Argentine defender Cristian Romero.

The 23-year-old defender has recently made the switch to The Tottenham Hotspur stadium. The youngster is still getting used to the conditions and style of play in England but has already garnered some praise in his limited time at the club.

Spurs have been struggling in the centre-back department for some time now as they have been trying on different partnerships. Eric Dier made the permanent switch from defensive midfielder to central defence when Jose Mourinho was still manager of the Lilywhites.

The North London club has tried a variety of central defensive partnerships in the Premier League this season but haven’t managed to establish a proper pairing at the back this season. Spurs also had to witness too humiliating defeats to fellow rivals Chelsea and Arsenal in this campaign so far.

The former Keeper highlighted the 23-year-old Argentine’s abilities:

“Spurs have been crying out for a world-class centre-half for a long time now and he is one. [Davinson] Sanchez and [Eric] Dier started the season well but they are not a pairing that would get in any other top eight Premier League side. Romero has looked a class above when he’s played.

“His range of passing is phenomenal. Teams play a high press now and try to win the ball high up the field. With Romero’s range of passing and Tottenham’s pace in the final third, Tottenham can play evade that press with one ball.”

Romero played an integral part in Tottenham’s victory over Aston Villa in their last PL fixture. The Argentine was resolute at the back and a dependable asset for the club. Son Heung-Min played a crucial part in that match to help secure a much-needed win against the Villains on Sunday. The Argentine centre-back cost the Lilywhites £13million this summer.

Lionel Messi is also thought to be pretty fond of the player. He supposedly asked Barcelona to sign his young Argentine teammate whilst the 34-year-old forward was still at Barcelona.
